Children’s Books & YA

a Writer who leans into History…and more

After several decades as a teacher, I know a thing or two about what students might need to read for a school project. I’ve certainly been in the midst of changing attitudes about education from one thing to the next. And I’ve witnessed firsthand how electronics are altering the upcoming generations. Still, kids of all ages enjoy a good story. They like to hold the actual book.

Do you have a manuscript that needs editing before you publish it?

I’ve been published in several genres. I’ve been grateful when they’ve won recognition.

Following my third grade passion

Here’s just one way reading a book impacted my life. Writing on Native American themes has been a lifelong interest ever since I read a biography of Sacagawea in third grade. This led to a deep love of history and travel. I spent hours lying along the Columbia and Snake River convergence outside Pasco, Washington as an eight-year-old, imagining Sacagawea with the Lewis and Clarke expedition camped on an island there.

I didn’t know anyone with a boat who could take me there. I learned to swim thinking I’d get myself to the island to look for arrowheads. Well, that didn’t happen because we moved far away. But eventually, I’d travel their entire route! And every now and then, I make that trip to visit Sacajawea State Park and sit on the bank of the Columbia River daydreaming.

I never get tired of appreciating the hard choices and brilliance of those who’ve come before us. That’s why I love reading about, researching, and writing historical projects. But I also get inspiration from everyday life, especially real things that happen in our family.

An elementary class picture from Pasco, Washington. We lived near Sacajawea State Park, where I liked to daydream along the Columbia River. I’m in the headband, first row.
